What Our Dogs’ Names Say About Us

On this blog we share a lot of useful information on everything from the best food to buy your
furry friend, how to deal with vaccinations, the best dog for your lifestyle, and so much more.
With all that useful but serious information, sometimes it’s important to just relax with some
fun dog facts. With that in mind, we are happy to share with you the official list of last year’s
most popular dog names! Yes, that’s right, just like children, dog names come in and out of
fashion. So, what names made the top ten this year and what were the dog name trends in
general. Let’s find out.

Before we get to the final list, let’s go over some trends. Not surprisingly, pop culture has made
its way into a lot of dog names lately. Between Star Wars, a royal wedding, and a host of
superhero-inspired movies, a lot of interesting names starting popping up for our pets. “Harry”
and “Meghan” both increased by over 100% thanks, we’re sure, to the prince and princess’s
wedding that year. And in large part to the blockbuster about the life of Freddy Mercury, both
“Freddy” and “Mercury” showed up as more popular than ever before.

Perhaps something we should be concerned about is the major uptick in villainous names. Loki,
Bane, and Syd all made appearances in 2018. It’s hard to imagine a name like “Loki” being
popular at all before the huge success of the Marvel franchise. But the biggest jump for an evil
name was “Pennywise”, which shot up a shocking 500% from the previous year!
One interesting trend seems to be the inspiration people get from the new things they do with
their dogs. As more and more places become dog friendly, and society in general becomes
more accepting of service and therapy dogs, people are enjoying life with their pets more than
ever before. Those popular outdoor brunches (especially the ones with a lot of alcohol) might
have contributed to fun names like “Whiskey” and “Guinness.”

But, at the end of the day, there’s one type of name that steals the show when it comes to
popularity: human names! And why not? More than ever before, loving dog owners see their
furry companions as truly part of the family. And isn’t any true family member deserving of a
real name, not some silly character name? The most popular names of 2018 reflect how close
humans and dogs have become over the years. So, without further ado, the most popular dog
names of 2018 are:

For Male Dogs:
1. Max
2. Charlie
3. Cooper
4. Buddy
5. Jack
6. Rocky
7. Duke
8. Bear
9. Tucker
10. Oliver

For Female Dogs:
1. Bella
2. Lucy
3. Luna
4. Daisy
5. Lola
6. Sadie
7. Molly
8. Bailey
9. Maggie
10. Stella

So, there you have it. We’re already halfway through 2019 so the jury is still out on what trends
or events will influence this year’s list. Whatever names end up making the grade, we can be
sure that humans and dogs will continue to forge tighter bonds every year.
