Service Dog Registration of America

Service Dog Harness by Montana Supply Company

A harness is the piece of service dog equipment handlers use most, for two reasons. It spreads pressure across the chest instead of the throat, which matters for any dog that braces, guides or pulls as part of its trained work — and it gives you a flat, visible surface to mount patches on, so a stranger reads your dog's job from across a room. Neither is a legal obligation: nothing in the ADA says a service dog must be marked, and no business may insist on paperwork before admitting one.

This harness ships with two removable Velcro "Service Dog" patches already included and pre-sewn Velcro inserts to hold them, so you can swap in "In Training" or "Please Don't Pet Me" as the situation changes. The shell is lightweight rip-stop nylon — durable, waterproof, breathable, washable and reflective — so it handles rain, airport floors and long working days without becoming a distraction for the dog. Sizes run XXS to XL and are set by rib cage circumference in inches, not by weight, so measure the widest part of the chest before you order.

We’ve created this durable, comfortable, and weatherproof harness because we share your values when it comes to the wellbeing of you and your service dog.

Coming in every size from XXS to XL, we want to make sure that no matter the size of your service dog, there is a harness that fits. The reflective color will ensure your service dog’s safety while the lightweight mesh fabric will keep him/her comfortable and mobile – ensuring that your service dog’s attention is where it should be, on your health and safety.

As you well know, there is a huge disconnect between what your rights are as a service dog handler and what the general public believes about these animals. We know first hand what it feels like to have to explain your service dog, or worse, your personal medical condition, to strangers, shop owners, and airline attendants. Some people, although well meaning, believe that service dogs are reserved for people with noticeable disabilities like blindness.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my dog for a service dog harness?

Run a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs, and read the measurement in inches. Sizing here is by rib cage circumference, never by weight — two dogs at the same weight routinely need different sizes. Check the sizing chart on this page before selecting.

Are the patches included, and can I change them later?

Two removable "Service Dog" patches come with the harness, attached with Velcro. The harness has pre-sewn Velcro inserts, so any of our Velcro-backed patches — "Service Dog in Training", "Please Don't Pet Me" — will mount on the same panels.

Is a service dog harness required by law?

No. The ADA requires only that the dog be under your control, which usually means a leash, harness or tether unless that equipment would interfere with the dog's work. No specific harness, marking or paperwork is required, and staff may only ask whether the dog is needed because of a disability and what task it performs.
