A plain "Service Dog" marking on the flank of a harness reaches a store manager, a flight attendant or a curious stranger before they reach you, and most handlers find that is enough to move through a situation without a conversation. Worth saying plainly: a patch carries no legal weight. The ADA asks for no marking at all, and none of this is documentation.
This is a set of two patches with Velcro backing, so they mount straight onto the pre-sewn Velcro panels of our Montana Supply Company harness and lift off again when the dog is off duty. They can also be sewn onto any fabric if you would rather they stayed put — a vest, a jacket, a pack. Which patch size should I order?
Match the harness, not the dog. Small (3 x 1 inches) fits the XXS, XS and S harnesses in our store; large (4 x 1.5 inches) fits M, L and XL. If your harness came from elsewhere, measure the flat panel you plan to mount on.
Will these stick to a harness or vest I already own?
They will if it has a hook-and-loop panel — the backing is standard Velcro. If your harness has no Velcro, the patches can be sewn onto the fabric directly, which is also the sturdier option for gear that gets washed often.
Does a patch prove my dog is a service dog?
No, and be careful of anyone who says otherwise. No patch, ID or certificate is legal proof under the ADA, and none is required. What a patch does is communicate — it tells people nearby that your dog is working so they behave accordingly, which is the practical problem most handlers are actually solving.
